This week Oklahoma edge Brynden Walker has officially stepped away from football, retiring due to medical reasons. Sources tell me that Brynden suffered an injury in camp this week, making a move inevitable. Brynden was a player considered to have a high ceiling that the current and former staff were excited to see develop. Walker has struggled with injuries here and there since joining Oklahoma; this one was just the final blow.

This chapter of my life has come to end, but we’re onto bigger and better things now…
All Praise to the Most High! pic.twitter.com/LJ10i6pLkp
Walker’s father, Denard, was a nine-year NFL veteran (CB) who played primarily for the Tennessee Titans after being taken in the 3rd round coming out of LSU in the 1997 NFL draft. He started in their super bowl appearance in 2000 against the St. Louis Rams.
Brynden was of the old mold of the diamond in the rough recruiting prospect, who had a very high ceiling and came from a football background, and knew what it would take to succeed. Brynden played his high school ball at Bishop McGuinness high school in Oklahoma City, where he helped lead the Fighting Irish to an appearance in the 5A state championship game. Walker was disruptive and played at a high level as an OKpreps player.
While it is unfortunate that his playing career is over, the OUDNA is still clear to coach Venables who hired Walker to be on the staff for the Sooners. He will take on a role as Student defensive assistant alongside Jeremiah Criddell, who also medically retired this offseason. Walker’s goal is to become a doctor and is doing a tremendous academic job as he was an honorable mention of All-Big 12 Academic a season ago.
So thankful for @calebkkelly and @CoachVenables! Also, thank you @OUHealth for giving me the opportunity to spend the week with you guys! Can’t wait to come back! #SOUL pic.twitter.com/rdp1KhUIoY

Brynden is the type of young man who will be a winner on or off the football field! We look forward to seeing Mr. Walker in our communities as a healthcare provider!
