Oklahoma football: Top 7 QBs in last 75 years of Sooner football
No. 1 — Baker Mayfield
Baker Mayfield was the man who turned things around for Oklahoma during a five-year outright Big 12 title drought. Mayfield is a top-five QB in NCAA history, recently named the best since 2000 according to ESPN.
Mayfield left Oklahoma as the No. 2 quarterback in FBS history in passing efficiency rating (175.4; Sam Bradford was No, 1 at 175.6), third in passing yards per attempt (9.7), fourth in touchdown passes (131), fifth in total offense (15.690) and seventh in passing yards (14,607). He also set an FBS record for consecutive games with at least two touchdown passes (each of his last 27 games as a Sooner).
Baker led Oklahoma to three straight Big 12 championships and two CFP appearances. The signal-caller won the Heisman Trophy in 2017 and was a finalist the year before that. He went No, 1 overall in the 2018 NFL draft to the Cleveland Browns.
Mayfield helped them win the NFL Browns win their first playoff game since 1994. Mayfield was not born yet the last time the Browns won a playoff game, and it was their first road playoff win since they were in the same conference as the Dallas Cowboys.
The Browns decided to move on and now Mayfield’s NFL career will continue with the Carolina Panthers. He finished top four in the Heisman voting three times, something no other QB has accomplished. The former walk-on sits atop this list. Truly no better story could be written.
