Oklahoma football: Ranking the top seven wide receivers in Sooner history
By Aaron Gelvin
No. 2– Mark Clayton
Mark Clayton was special at Oklahoma. He’s the oldest player in these rankings, and was the school’s all-time leader in many of the receiving categories when he left town.
Clayton was at his best during the 2003 season. That year he caught 15 touchdowns on 83 catches and had 1,425 receiving yards. He and quarterback Jason White really mastered the art of the deep ball, so much so that it was a big factor in White winning the Heisman Trophy.
Clayton’s size and speed made him a very tough cover, especially back in the early 2000s. He was also adept at high-pointing the football and was a weapon all over the field. He was one of the first in a long line of excellent Sooner receivers in the 21st century, and likely left Norman as the greatest at that position in school history.
Clayton was a first round pick by the Baltimore Ravens in 2005, and he had the best years of his professional career playing for the Ravens. He played for the Rams as well before retiring in 2013.
