Oklahoma football spotlight: Senior OG McKade Mettauer
Almost one-third of the Oklahoma football roster for the coming 2022 season is made up of newcomers: members of the Sooners’ 2022 recruiting class and players from the transfer portal.
Periodically during the summer months, we will be introducing you to these new faces. Today we introduce you to offensive guard McKade Mettauer, who comes to OU as a transfer from the University of California.
The Oklahoma offensive line lost two players, guard Marquis Hayes and guard/tackle Tyrese Robinson, who started many games for the Crimson and Cream over the last few years. With a few players in the O-line room also entering the transfer portal, Oklahoma needed to take a check there as well. They did just that, bringing in a couple of players along the offensive front. One of them is TCU transfer, Tyler Guyton. The other is Cal transfer Mettauer.
Who is McKade Mettauer?
Mettauer is a senior offensive guard, who played three seasons at California, and has two years of eligibility remaining. He was initially in the 2018 recruiting class and considered a unanimous three-star prospect. Mettauer is from The Woodlands, Texas, where he earned all-state honors in his final three high school seasons in Texas 6A.
In 2021 McKade was an honorable All-Pac 12 player, according to the league coaches. Pro Football Focus graded him a second-team all-Pac-12 in its evaluation. Mettauer was the best offensive lineman for the Golden Bears.
Depth chart projection and impact
McKade is expected to come in and win the job at right or left guard and start immediately for the Sooners, who recently lost Marquis Hayes to the NFL. For Oklahoma, adding McKade is a significant relief. While the Sooners are talented all along the front, there is not much experience. McKade has experience in spades. Pairing him with Chris Murray, who was a transfer himself a year ago from UCLA, should make a solid duo for OU. From everything I have heard, he has had one heck of spring. The Sooners are excited to have him out there.
Scouting
Powerful, high-effort player, who finishes with a nasty streak in the run game. He struggles at times technique-wise as a pass blocker but still did not give up a sack at all in 2021. Size-wise, he is average, with average arm length. He is athletic and can pull and kick in the run game. With Bill Bedenbaugh as his coach, we should see a big uptick in his technique and ability as a pass blocker, as that is a specialty of Bedenbaugh. He has tremendous leadership ability and is a highly intelligent player; he understands angles and protections.
