Oklahoma basketball: Sooners to host Alabama in 2023 Big 12/SEC Challenge
By Chip Rouse
Next season marks the 10th year of the Big 12/SEC Basketball Challenge, and the 10 matchups for the 2022-23 season have just been announced.
The Sooners will be at home for the 10th anniversary of the Big 12/SEC Challenge series, hosting the Alabama Crimson Tide. The game is scheduled for Jan. 28 and will be the third time the Sooners and Alabama have met as part of this interconference challenge series.
Alabama defeated 12th-ranked Oklahoma 80-71 at Alabama in 2018 in Trae Young’s one season playing for the Sooners. Young, who led the nation in scoring and assists that season, was just 6 of 17 shooting for 17 points against Bama in that game.
The same two teams met again three year later in Norman, this time with Oklahoma prevailing 66-61. The Sooners came into that contest in 2021 as No. 24 in the country; the Crimson Tide came in ranked No. 9.
Oklahoma is 6-3 all-time in men’s basketball against Alabama.
For the eighth consecutive year in the Big 12/SEC Challenge, all 10 games will be played on the same day (Saturday, Jan. 28). Times and broadcast schedules will be announced at a later date.
Oklahoma sports a 6-3 record in the series with wins over Alabama, LSU, Mississippi State, Missouri, Texas A&M and Vanderbilt. The Sooners’ three losses have come against No. 1 Auburn last season, Alabama and Florida.
Oklahoma has won nine of its last 10 games against SEC opponents and had won nine consecutive games against teams from the SEC before losing 86-68 on the road at Auburn last season.
Big 12 teams have an overall record of 48-41 in the nine previous seasons of the Big 12/SEC Challenge. The Big 12 has won the Challenge in four of the nine seasons, lost three times, and three years each conference won five games.
