Oklahoma football: The Top-10 teams in Sooner gridiron history
By Aaron Gelvin
No. 5 — 1985 Oklahoma Sooners team
1985
Record: 11-1 overall (7-0 Big 8) National Champions
Head Coach: Barry Switzer
The 1985 Oklahoma Sooners were known for being brash, loud and full of personality.
The team was angry after losing out on the 1984 national championship and played with a vengeance all season long in ’85. The stars on this team go on forever, with names like Jamelle Holieway, Spencer Tillman, Derrick Shepard, Keith Jackson and Lydell Carr. And that’s just the offense.
The defense was stout, led by Tony Casillas, Brian Bosworth, Kevin Murphy and Rickey Dixon. A loss against Miami early in the year when starting quarterback Troy Aikman was injured and lost for the season is the only blemish on the 1985 team. Aikman was replaced in the Miami game by Holieway and after the season transferred to UCLA.
Oklahoma steamrolled everyone in their path after that en route to a date in the Orange Bowl against Penn State. The Sooners won that game 25-10 to become national champions.
