No. 9 — 1971 Oklahoma Sooners team

Record: 11-1 overall (6-1 Big 8)

Head Coach: Chuck Fairbanks

The 1971 Sooners may be best known for competing in the “Game of the Century” against Nebraska, a 35-31 victory for the Cornhuskers. That was the only blemish in an otherwise dominant season in Norman. Jack Mildren, Greg Pruitt, Jon Harrison and Tom Brahaney highlighted this squad.

The offense led the nation in both scoring and total yards as Switzer (then the offensive coordinator) had perfected the Wishbone offense by the early 70s. Nebraska would go on to become the consensus national champion this season, while OU would have to settle for a No. 2 ranking, capped off with a 40-22 beatdown of Auburn in the Sugar Bowl.
