Honorable Mention: 1973 Oklahoma football team

Record: 10-0-1 overall (7-0 Big 8)

Head Coach: Barry Switzer

Barry Switzer’s first season as the coach of the Sooners featured a team that didn’t lose a game. The only blemish on their record was a 7-7 tie on the road against USC (imagine if that happened in 2022).

The 1973 season was the first of eight consecutive conference championships under Switzer. This team is the only one that featured all three Selmon brothers starting on the same defensive line. Steve Owens, Joe Washington and Tinker Owens were among the leaders on offense. In fact, the only reason this squad is an honorable mention is because it didn’t bring home a championship.

Prior to this season, the Sooners were put on probation by the NCAA, which included a two-year ban on bowl appearances. The UPI Coaches Poll named Alabama the national champions before the Crimson Tide would lose in the Sugar Bowl against Notre Dame, who was promptly named national champs by the AP poll. Had OU not been on probation, it would have faced Alabama instead of Notre Dame.
