No. 1 — 1956 Oklahoma Sooners team

1956

Record: 10-0 overall (6-0 Big 7) National Champions

Head Coach: Bud Wilkinson

The 1956 Sooners are the greatest team in school history. They were also a part of the 47-game winning streak and were an absolute juggernaut.

What gives this Oklahoma football team the edge over the other great Sooner teams is the sheer dominance they displayed in every aspect of the game.

The 1956 Oklahoma team outscored its opponent by a score of 466 to 51 in over a 10-game schedule. The only remotely close game that season was a 27-19 win on the road against Colorado. The ’56 Sooners pitched six shutouts. The only teams to score besides Colorado were Kansas (12), Missouri (14) and Nebraska (6). This team was headlined by a plethora of stars like Jimmy Harris, Tommy McDonald, Jerry Tubbs, Ed Gray, Billy Pricer, Bob Derrick and Tom Emerson.

The Sooners finished the season undefeated and were first in both polls after the regular season concluded. At the time, the Big Seven had a no-repeat rule for bowl games, so the Sooners were unable to play in the Orange Bowl (Colorado won it instead). Even that can’t dampen the case that the 1956 Oklahoma Sooners were one of the most dominant college football teams of all time.
