Oklahoma golfer Chris Gotterup, a key figure in the Sooners’ rise to the No. 1 ranking in collegiate golf this season, has been named winner of the 2022 Haskins Award.

The Haskins Award is presented annually to the nation’s top collegiate golfer, and Gotterup is the first Sooner to win the coveted individual golf honor.

Gotterup transferred to Oklahoma after four years at Rutgers. He was the Big Ten Player of the Year in 2019-20. This season at OU, he was the individual champion at the East Lake Cup and the Puerto Rico Classic and finished as runner-up at the Big 12 Championship.

This past weekend Gotterup tied for fifth in the NCAA Individual Championship, just one shot back of the champion, Gordan Sargent of Vanderbilt.

He was a unanimous choice by both Golfstat and the Golfweek/Sagarin rankings as the No. 1 player in collegiate golf for the 2022 season.

Gotterup helped lead the Sooners to a record-tying seven wins this season and Oklahoma’s 18th conference championship.

The New Jersey native moved from outside the top 60 in the PGA Tour U rankings to the No. 6 spot in the final rankings this season. That assures Gotterup of professional status on an affiliated tour of the PGA following the NCAA Championship.

Oklahoma head coach Ryan Hybl expressed the team’s excitement and high praise for what the Rutgers transfer accomplished in his one season at OU. “What makes Chris really special,” Hybl said in a statement issued by the OU athletic department, “is how great of a teammate he is and how he’s helped elevate this program.”
