The Oklahoma football Sooners have added another weapon to their already uber-talented wide receiver room.
LV Bunkley-Shelton announced via Twitter than he would be joining Oklahoma after transferring from Arizona State, where he played for two seasons. He had entered the portal on April 29. His decision was reportedly down to Big 12 foes Oklahoma and Kansas.
Bunkley-Shelton stands at around six-feet tall and weighs 180 pounds. He was a four-star recruit in the 2020 class for Herm Edwards and Arizona State, coming out of Junipero Serra high school in California and arrives at OU with three years of eligibility remaining.
In Bunkley-Sheltonβs freshman season at Arizona State he caught 11 passes in just four games, as ASUβs 2020 season was shortened due to the COVID-19 pandemic. In 2021, he caught 33 balls for 418 yards and two scores. He was projected as a starter at receiver and as a punt returner for the Sun Devils in 2022.
Bunkley-Shelton gives OU offensive coordinator Jeff Lebby another receiver to use in many different ways, as he can play in the slot or on the outside. He joins a wide receiver group that needed more depth behind projected starters Marvin Mims, Theo Wease, Drake Stoops and Jalil Farooq. Bunkley-Shelton slots in alongside younger players like Jayden Gibson, Nic Anderson, Brian Darby and Trevon West, as well as Missouri transfer Javian βJJβ Hester.
Wide receivers coach Cale Gundy will have options regardomg which receivers see the field the most. Veteran tight end/H-back Brayden Willis will also have a large role in the passing game.
It has been a busy time in the transfer portal for the Sooners who have added much-needed depth at two important positions on offense with Hester and Bunkley-Shelton at WR and Davis Beville and General Booty at QB. Oklahoma has recovered nicely after losing weapons like Jeremiah Hall and Michael Woods to the NFL and Jaden Haselwood, Austin Stogner, Mario Williams and others to the transfer portal.
Lebbyβs offense will have a different look than what OU fans have been used to seeing over the past few seasons, and the mix of a few familiar faces along with the new names will help usher in the new era of offense at Oklahoma.
