Oklahoma golf: No. 1 Sooners beat Horns, Pokes to win Big 12 Championship
By Chip Rouse
The No. 1-ranked men’s Oklahoma golf team outlasted both Texas and Oklahoma State to win the 2022 Big 12 Golf Championship.
All three teams held the lead at some point over the final 18 holes on Wednesday, with the Sooners securing the win on the 54th and final hole of the rain-shortened conference championship.
The Sooners trailed by four strokes with four holes remaining in the conference championship held at the Whispering Pines Golf Club in Trinity, Texas.
Oklahoma picked up critical birdies from senior Logan McAllister and freshman Drew Goodman in the closing holes as the Sooners closed out the win, shooting three-under-par over the final four holes to beat out three NCAA Division I top-10 teams and claim their third conference crown in golf since the formation of the Big 12 in 1996.

Oklahoma finished the 54-hole tournament with a team score of 14-under 850. No. 2 Oklahoma State was second at 12-under 852 and No. 9 Texas ended up third, one stroke back of the Cowboys. Texas Tech, the country’s fifth-ranked team, according to the lastest Golfstat rankings, was fourth.
The championship, originally scheduled for 72 holes, was shortened to 54 because the first day on Monday was washed out by inclement weather.
Three Sooners finished in the top 10 on the individual leaderboard, led by Rutgers transfer Chris Gotterup, who was second overall with a six-under score of 210. McAllister was tied for sixth at 213 and senior Patrick Welch finished in a tie for ninth with a 54-hole score of 214. Goodman finished just outside of the top 10 with a share of 11th place at 2015.
Texas began the final round with a one shot lead over Oklahoma and two ahead of Oklahoma State. The Sooners carded six birdies in the opening three holes of final day on Wednesday to overtake the Longhorns. Texas rallied in the first few holes on the back nine but failed to record a birdie after the 14th hole.
The conference title was Oklahoma’s first since 2018 and the second under head coach Ryan Hybl. The top-ranked Sooners earn the Big 12’s automatic berth in the NCAA Championship by virtue of capturing the conference crown. OU will be making its 11th consecutive appearance in the NCAA Regionals.
The selections and sites for the NCAA Men’s Golf Regionals will be announced on May 4.
