No. 6 Baker Mayfield’s 6 greatest games as a Sooner
Baker Mayfield is a recent legend in Oklahoma football history and in college football in general.
Oklahoma had not won an outright Big 12 championship since 2010 when Mayfield became the OU starting QB in 2015. The Sooners had not been recruiting at the level they had in the past under Stoops. Mayfield was eternalized in bronze during the OU spring game in front of 75,000 plus in attendance.
Mayfield walking on at the University of Oklahoma and earning a starting spot inspired the people of the Sooner State. Mayfield was one of us after all. He grew up in enemy territory down in Austin, Texas, but was never afraid to show off his Sooner swagger in a room full of Longhorn fans.
Mayfield was an immediate difference maker that led Oklahoma away from the cliff where they stared down mediocrity, and instead guided Oklahoma back into the national picture. Under Mayfield’s watch the Sooners would win three Big 12 championships, make a New Year’s Six game and appear in two College Football Playoff games. Though Oklahoma was unable to win those playoff games, the Sooners were back in the fray in a way they had not been in a very long time.
Mayfield grew up coming to Oklahoma games as a kid with his family, and always dreamed of having a Heisman statue in Heisman Park. Which he now, in fact has.
Nostalgia is strong in Sooner Nation right now of the fond memories of No. 6, the university’s 6th Heisman winner. Here are the top six Oklahoma games of the Mayfield era, according to ….. me! Feel free to comment at the conclusion of this piece with your favorite six moments, we would love to hear from you!
