Oklahoma softball sweeps Iowa State boosting record to nation-best 42-1
The No. 1-ranked Oklahoma softball Sooners hosted Iowa State in Norman over the weekend.
The Cyclones have given some trouble to other teams this year and even took one from conference-leading Oklahoma State a couple of weeks ago. That wasn’t the case this weekend, however, as the Sooners swept their three-game series to improve to 42-1 overall and 11-1 in the Big 12.
Last weekend, Oklahoma lost its first game of the season to the Texas Longhorns and was looking to bounce back with a strong weekend series at home against Iowa State. Because of a projected inclement weather forecast, the weekend schedule was restructured. Instead of the third game taking place on Sunday, the two schools agreed to play a doubleheader on Friday evening.
The first game of Friday’s doubleheader was an absolute grinder. Both teams played gutsy, and the Sooners eventually won the contest 6-4 in a full seven-inning game. The Cyclones jumped out to a 3-1 lead in the top of the third inning, but the Sooners put up a five-spot in the home half of the third to take a 6-3 lead. Jana Johns clubbed two-run home for the Sooners in the inning.
Jordy Bahl pitched 4 1/3 innings and struck out seven, allowing four earned runs on four hits. Nicole May and Hope Trautwein pitched a shutout the rest of the way. One of the keys to the victory was Oklahoma’s seven stolen bases!
The second game on Friday was not quite the sweater the first one was for the Sooner faithful, who packed Marita Hynes on the eve of the much-anticipated OU football spring game. Hope Trautwein got the start and shut out the Cyclones, permitting just one hit in a 9-0, five-inning, run-rule victory for OU. The bats were hot and ready as Alyssa Brito, Rylie Boone and Lynssie Elam all sent ball out of the park. Brito’s long ball walked it off in the fifth.
Saturday’s series finale was unique with Baker Mayfield throwing out the first pitch and spending some time hyping up the Sooner squad, expressing his opinion of the coaching legend Patty Gasso with a shirt that referred to her as the “GOAT”.
Jordy Bahl fanned six, allowing only one hit in Oklahoma’s 9-0 run rule victory on Saturday. Jocelyn Alo homered in the game, the 110th of her record-breaking career and 22nd of the season.
Next on the schedule is a Thursday night game in Kansas City against the University of Missouri-Kansas City. OU will then take a left turn and head to Lawrence, Kansas, for its final Big 12 road series against the Kansas Jayhawks.
