Women’s Oklahoma gymnastics is advancing to the NCAA Women’s Gymnastics Championship Finals for the ninth consecutive year.
The Sooners, the No. 1 overall seed in this year’s NCAA Women’s Championship, posted a semifinal score of 198.1125, the highest score ever record by an OU women’s squad and the fifth highest in NCAA Championship semifinal or final event.
Oklahoma moves on the Saturday’s championship final in Ft. Worth, Texas, along with No. 4 Utah, the second-place finisher in the Sooner’s semifinal bracket, and two other teams (to be decided in the second semifinal session between No. 2 Florida, No. 3 Auburn, No. 7 Michigan, the reigning national champions, and No. 11 Missouri).
“Making it to the top eight is a really big win,” said OU head coach K.J. Kindler in a press release issued by the OU athletic department. “It’s very hard in our sport with the parity that exists across the board.
“Getting here, that was tough too. Our goal today was to win the session.”
The Sooners are 28-2 this season and seeking their fifth national championship, all since 2014. OU’s only losses have been to then-No. 4 Utah and No. 3 Florida much earlier in the season.
Oklahoma scored 49.3500 on vault in its first rotation, which put them .125 behind Utah, which tallied 49.475 in floor exercise, the Utes opening rotation. But OU’s big score of 49.575 on bars in the second rotation gave the Sooners the lead, which they refused to relinquish the rest of the way.
The Sooners posted the highest team score on bars and floor exercise and finished second to Utah in vault and on the beam. OU closed out its semifinal championship with another big score in floor exercise, led by Jordan Bowers 9.965 high score for the individual championship in that event. The Sooners’ floor team score of 49.675 tied the team’s highest NCAA Championship score in the event.
OU’s Audrey Davis shared the individual title on the uneven bars with Jade Carey, an individual NCAA Championship qualifier from Oregon State. Carey also was the all-around champion.
