Oklahoma football: Sooners offer Florida State transfer QB Chubba Purdy
By Chip Rouse
New Oklahoma football coach Brent Venables is not satisfied having just one experienced quarterback replacement should freshman sensation Caleb Williams ultimately decide to change schools.
A week ago, the Sooners picked up Dillon Gabriel, former starting QB at UCF, through the transfer portal to hedge its bet after learning that Williams was entering the portal. It is widely believed that Williams is as good as gone or he wouldn’t be searching other options.
Multiple news outlets reported over the weekend that Oklahoma also has offered former Florida State quarterback Chubba Purdy a scholarship, who entered the portal this past November after two seasons at FSU.
If the name sounds familiar to Sooner fans, it should. Purdy is the younger brother of Brock Purdy, the starting quarterback for Iowa State the past four seasons.
The younger Purdy was a four-star dual-threat quarterback recruiting the 2020 class. He was rated by 247Sports as the No. 7 QB prospect and the No. 6 player overall in the state of Arizona. Coincidentally, former Sooner Spencer Rattler, the No. 1 dual-threat QB in the 2019 class, is also out of Arizona.
Purdy appeared in four games with one start at Florida State. He completed 27 of 53 passes for 219 yards and two touchdowns as a freshman in 2020 and was five for five for 98 yards and two touchdowns this past season. He also rushed for 62 yards.
As a high school senior in Gilbert, Arizona, Purdy threw for 4,423 yards and 52 touchdowns. He received scholarship offers from Florida State, Louisville, Arizona State, UCF, Michigan State, Kansas State, Utah, Washington State and others and chose FSU. Josh Heupel was the head coach at UCF and new OU offensive coordinator Jeff Lebby was the OC when UCF extended an offer to Purdy.
The Sooners did not have a quarterback in its 2022 recruiting class when Lincoln Riley left Norman in late November to take the head job at USC, but Venables was able to sign former Florida four-star QB commit Nick Evers on early signing day in December.
