Oklahoma football: Sooners’ 2022 season schedule is finalized
By Chip Rouse
Oklahoma football is without a head coach right now, but the 2022 schedule is ready for the new head man when he arrives.
This would indicate that Oklahoma does not plan to leave the Big 12 for the SEC for at least another year, given that the 2022 schedule includes nine games against Big 12 opponents.
The schedule is perfectly divided in thirds with four games in September, four in October and four in November.
The Sooners will open the 2022 season on Sept. 3 at home at Gaylord Family-Oklahoma Memorial Stadium against the University of Texas-El Paso (UTEP). Kent State, out of the Mid-American Conference comes in the following weekend.
Oklahoma’s final nonconference game for 2022 is a road contest, the back end of a home-and-home series with Nebraska. The Cornhuskers played at OU last season, and the 2022 game between these two former longtime conference rivals will be in Lincoln.
The Big 12 season-opener for the Sooners will be at home on Sept. 24 against Kansas State. On Oct. 1 Oklahoma will go to TCU, and OU will be back in the Lone Star State and the Dallas-Ft. Worth metroplex area the next weekend for the annual Red River rivalry game against Texas.
Kansas comes to Norman on Oct. 15. The Sooners are off for 12 days after the home date with Kansas and don’t return to action until Oct. 27, a rare Thursday night game at Iowa State. The last time Oklahoma played on a Thursday night was in 2016 and, ironically, it was at Iowa State. The Sooners won that game 34-24.
The Sooners close out the regular season at home against Baylor on Nov. 5, at West Virginia (Nov. 12), back home to host Oklahoma State in Bedlam (Nov. 19), then back out on the road for the regular-season finale at Texas Tech (Nov. 26).
