Oklahoma football: Caleb Williams earns second Big 12 Player of Week honor
By Chip Rouse
A pair of Oklahoma football freshman named Williams earned Big 12 weekly honors for their Week 9 performance.
Quarterback Caleb Williams and wide-receiver Mario Williams were major impact players in Oklahoma’s 52-21 win over Texas Tech on Saturday.
Caleb is the Big 12 Offensive Player of the Week and Mario was named the Newcomer of the Week in the conference. Both are true freshmen.
Caleb Williams had another brilliant performance since taking over the starting quarterback job in Week 7 after the Texas game. He completed 76 percent of his passes (23 of 30) against Texas Tech for a career-high 402 yards and six touchdowns. His 402 passing yards set a new freshman record at OU and his six touchdowns tied Landry Jones for the most by a Sooner freshman quarterback.
In his three starts at quarterback, Williams has 14 touchdown passes and one interception, and his 203.7 passing efficiency rating is the second-best nationally. He is just the third QB in Oklahoma history to throw six touchdown passes in a single game without throwing an interception.
Mario Williams was on the receiving end of five passes from the other Williams for a career-high 100 yards, including a 22-yard scoring pass for the Sooners’ opening touchdown on Saturday.
This is Caleb Williams’ second designation this season as Big 12 Offensive Player of the Week. He also has earned a Big 12 Newcomer of the Week accolade.
The two other Big 12 Week 9 award winners are Kansas State sophomore defensive end Felix Anudike-Uzomah, Big 12 Defensive Player of the Week, and Oklahoma State senior kicker Tanner Brown.
Oklahoma is off this week and does not return to action until Nov. 13 at Baylor.
