Oklahoma football: All-time gridiron series with TCU short, but OU sweet
By Chip Rouse
The Oklahoma football series with TCU has been lopsided in the Sooners’ favor lately, but don’t let that fool you.
The fourth-ranked Sooners have prevailed in seven consecutive games, including for the Big 12 championship in 2017, but the Horned Frogs have had success against OU, including beating the Sooners four times in Norman, which also happens to be the site for the game on Saturday.
TCU (3-2, 1-1) travels up I-35 to Oklahoma for a Saturday night primetime game fresh off a 52-31 road win at Texas Tech. This will be the 22nd all-time meeting between the two schools and 10th since the Horned Frogs became members of the Big 12.
Oklahoma owns a 16-5 record in the all-time series and is 9-1 over TCU in the Big 12. TCU’s lone win over the Sooners as a member of the Big 12 was a 37-33 home victory in 2014.
The Sooners and Horned Frogs have met 11 other times as nonconference foes. The series record under those circumstances was not quite that one-sided. The two teams played for five consecutive seasons beginning in 1944, the inaugural game between OU and TCU.
The first game in the series was contested on OU’s home field, with the Sooners winning 34-19. The following season, TCU returned to Norman and reversed the year-earlier loss, defeating the Sooners 13-7.
During the years that Oklahoma and TCU met as nonconference opponents, OU won seven times; TCU was victorious four times.
The Sooners are 8-1 when playing at TCU, but are just 7-4 over the Horned Frogs when playing before the home crowd at Oklahoma Memorial Stadium.
The two schools have had several memorable close games in recent years. Two years ago at OU, TCU rallied late but Oklahoma held on for a 28-24 victory.
In 2015, again at home and in Lincoln Riley’s first season at Oklahoma, then as offensive coordinator, the Sooners let a 23-7 halftime lead almost slip away. The Horned Frogs scored 16 unanswered points in the fourth quarter to pull within 30-29. Instead of kicking the extra point to tie the game, TCU went for two points to win the game. The two-point try was intercepted by Sooner defensive back Steven Parker preserving the one-point OU win.
In 2014, TCU snapped a three-game losing streak to the Sooners, winning 37-34 at TCU.
