Baker Mayfield, Cleveland Browns QB

Baker Mayfield is the only one of the the three former OU quarterbacks to to lose his Week 1 matchup. However, this can be expected when going against former Texas Tech star and NFL MVP and Super Bowl champion Patrick Mahomes.

Mayfield did have a strong and highly efficient performance despite not being able to take home the victory in this one.

The 2017 Heisman winner and No. 1 overall draft pick competed 21 of 28 passes for 321 yards. His only interception of the game, though, came at a most unfortunate time, killing a Cleveland drive with a little over a minute to go and sealing a 34-29 Kansas City Chiefs victory over Mayfield’s Browns.

Mayfield helped stake the Browns to an early lead that they held on to until midway through the final quarter.

Mayfield completed passes to eight different receivers and made some precision throws while rolling out from the pocket, throws that Sooner fans saw a lot of while he was at Oklahoma.

This was not a loss over which you could point a finger at the Browns’ offense, Kansas City simply had more firepower and was able to score quickly.

The fact that this game was so close against the Chiefs, one of if not the best team in the NFL, proves that the Browns are for real and here to stay. If a few critical plays had gone a different way, Cleveland comes out the victor in this one.

Mayfield has a chance to pick up the Browns’ first win of the season next weekend at home against the Houston Texans.
