Oklahoma football: Sooners vs. Tulane, injury report, TV, betting preview
By Chip Rouse
The 2021 Oklahoma football season kicks off on Saturday with the Sooners playing at home as the visiting team against the Tulane Green Wave out of the American Athletic Conference.
That is the same conference, incidentally, from which the Big 12 Conference is interested in plucking three teams: Cincinnati, Central Florida and Houston. An announcement to that effect could come as early as next week.
Saturday’s season-opening game at Gaylord Family – Oklahoma Memorial Stadium probably marks the first time in school history that the Sooners have played a home game as the visiting team.
Tulane is the designated home team because the game was originally scheduled to be played in New Orleans, but earlier in the week representatives of the two schools agreed to change the location because of the recovery and cleanup effort associated with Hurricane Ida.
Fun OU football facts
The Tulane game is the 1,300th in 127 seasons of Oklahoma football.
Here’s something else of interest: Ryan Aber, who covers the Oklahoma sports beat for The (Oklahoma City) Oklahoman, citing OU assistant athletic director Mike Houk, reported that on Saturday the Sooners will have been Big 12 champions for 2,102 consecutive days.
Oklahoma injury report
As of Friday morning, it appears Oklahoma is mostly healthy for the game with Tulane. Earlier in the week, however, it was reported that junior wide receiver Theo Wease is out indefinitely with an undisclosed lower leg injury. The other injury the team is reporting is redshirt-junior cornerback Ryan Peoples. He is listed as doubtful with an ankle injury.
Oklahoma vs. Tulane odds and betting pick
The Sooners are a 26.5-point favorite over Tulane, according to the WynnBET Sportsbook. The over/under on the game is 69.0. Given the over/under on this game, you can reasonably expect most of the points to be put up by Oklahoma’s high-octane offense, with preseason Heisman favorite Spencer Rattler at the controls and the Sooners horn-of-plenty offensive weapons. The real focus, however, will be on the OU defense, for which there are high expectations this season. The Sooners should be able to cover comfortably.
In my game preview this week, I predicted an Oklahoma victory, 52-13.
What TV channel is the OU-Tulane game on?
The game will be televised on ABC at 11 a.m. CT, with Dave Pasch doing the play-by-play and former Sooner Dusty Dvoracek providing analysis. Tom Luginbill will be on the sidelines.
Sooners next game and schedule
The Sooners next opponent will be Western Carolina, at home at Gaylord Family – Oklahoma Memorial Stadium, on Sept. 11. That is a 6 p.m. kickoff on PPV. The following weekend, Sept. 18, Oklahoma will host Nebraska. That game is scheduled to be televised as part of FOX’s “Big Noon Kickoff,” beginning at 11 a.m. CT.
