Oklahoma softball: Softball championship spurs OU to 4th in final Capital Cup standings
By Chip Rouse
Oklahoma softball’s fifth national championship in June fueled the Sooners women’s programs to a No. 4 finish in the 2020-21 Capital Cup standings.
OU finished in the top 10 in both the women’s and men’s division. Sooner men’s athletic programs finished 10th.
Oklahoma was one of five NCAA Division I schools that earned a top-10 finish in both the men’s and women’s divisions. The other three were Stanford, which finished first in both divisions, Michigan and North Carolina and Texas.
The fourth-place finish by the OU women tied their highest in the 11-year history of the Capital Cup. They also finished fourth in 2016, another year in which they won a national title in softball.
In addition to winning this year’s Women’s College World Series, Sooner women also captured a runner-up finish in the NCAA Women’s Gymnastics Championship, contributing to a grand total of 96 points.
This marked the fifth time the OU women have finished in the top 10.
The men earned a total of 63 points, fueled by runner-up finishes nationally in both golf and gymnastics and a top-10 finish in football.
The Capital One Cup recognizes NCAA Division I programs for their cumulative athletic performance across multiple sports (21 women’s and 20 men’s). Schools earn points for top-10 finishes in NCAA championships and in final official coaches’ polls.
Not including the pandemic-altered 2019-20 athletic year, Oklahoma athletic teams have won at least one national championship in each of the last eight years and 13 total during that stretch.
This is the third time since 2016-17 that both the OU men and women have finished in the top 10 in the Capital Cup standings.
