In many ways, this is the playoff loss that hurts the most, but that’s because this is a game Oklahoma could have and probably should have won.

The Sooners came out on fire, with quarterback Baker Mayfield and running back Rodney Anderson leading the charge. The No. 2-seeded Sooners scored on five of its first six possessions in the game and led Georgia, the No. 3 seed, 31-17 at the half.

The second half was a completely different story. Including a Rose Bowl-record 55-yard Georgia field goal just as the first-half ended, the Bulldogs went on a 24-0 run that erased the Oklahoma advantage and put Georgia up 38-31. From that point, Oklahoma countered with 14 unanswered points to go ahead 45-38, but Georgia responded with a late fourth-quarter touchdown to send the game to overtime.

Both teams registered field goals in the first overtime. A field-foal attempt by OU’s Austin Seibert in the second overtime was blocked, and on Georgia’s second overtime possession, Sony Michel scored on a 27-yard run right out of the gate to end the game and send Georgia to the national championship game against Jalen Hurts and Alabama.
