Entering this game, the fifth of the 2017 season, the Sooners had won 45 of their last 47 games against Iowa State and 18 in a row. With Baker Mayfield at quarterback, Oklahoma took a 24-13 lead into the locker room at halftime. Despite being without its starting quarterback, Iowa State managed to gain more passing yards than Mayfield and the Sooners on fewer completions, averaging 18.4 yards per completion.
The Cyclones outscored the home-team Sooners 25-7 in the second half and went on to win the game 38-31. The upset not only ended OU’s 18-game winning streak against Iowa State but also snapped the Sooners’ 14-game win streak against Big 12 opponents.
