Oklahoma football: Sooners’ presence in NFL HOF notable by omission

Lee Roy Selmon

Former No. 1 overall draft pick Lee Roy Selmon was the second OU player of note to become a member of the NFL Hall of Fame in 1995. Selmon, drafted No. 1 by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in the 1976 NFL Draft, played all nine of his NFL seasons with the Buccaneers.

Selmon joined his older brother Dewey, also a former Sooner, who was a second-round pick by the Buccaneers the same year Lee Roy was drafted. Lee Roy was voted Tampa Bay’s Rookie of the Year and Most Valuable Player his first season with the Buccaneers, and in 1979 was named the NFL Defensive Player of the Year.

McDonald and Selmon spent their entire college careers playing for Oklahoma. Troy Aikman, who played two seasons at OU before transferring to UCLA after suffering an injury in the the Sooners’ 1985 national championship season. Aikman was the No. 1 overall pick in the 1989 NFL Draft, selected by the Dallas Cowboys. His 12-year career with the Cowboys led to three Super Bowl wins, a Super Bowl MVP and six Pro Bowl selections and earned him a spot in the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 2006.

Selmon retired from the NFL in 1984. He died in 2011 of complications after suffering a massive stroke.
