Oklahoma football: Sooners get transfer kicker from Arizona State
By Chip Rouse
With Oklahoma football spring practice in full swing, the Sooners have added another transfer to the 2021 roster.
Josh Plaster, a placekicker and punter who played his freshman season at Arizona State in 2019, announced via Twitter on Tuesday that he was committing to Oklahoma.
Plaster shared kickoff duties at ASU in 2019 but was replaced last year by a Florida State transfer and was relegated to backup duty on kickoffs and punting duties. Because he did not see action in more than four games, he was able to preserve his sophomore year of eligibility.
He was a walk-on at Arizona State after a stellar high school career at Flower Mound High School in Flower Mound, Texas. Plaster was a top-100 punter and kicker in the class of 2019. According to the 247Sports composite rankings. he was the No, 43 kicking prospect and No. 85 punting prospect nationally coming out of high school.
Plaster kicked off 30 times in a total of five games his freshman season at Arizona State. Six of his 30 kickoffs were touchbacks.
With redshirt junior Gabe Brkic, the Big 12’s top field-goal kicker last season and OU’s primary kickoff specialist, and punter Reeves Mundshau both back in 2021, Plaster will most likely be relegated to backup duty with the Sooners as well.
Plaster is the sixth player acquired by Oklahoma this offseason through the transfer portal and the second from a major school in Arizona. Robert Congel, a former Arizona offensive lineman has joined the Sooners as a graduate transfer.
OU picked up three transfers from the Tennessee Volunteers — running back Eric Gray, offensive lineman Wanya Morris and defensive back Key Lawrence — after head coach Jeremy Pruitt was dismissed at the end of last season.
