Oklahoma football: Two Sooners named Freshman All-Americans
By Chip Rouse
Oklahoma football quarterback Spencer Rattler and wide receiver Marvin Mims have been named to the 2020 Freshman All-America Team.
An Oklahoma freshman has made the all-freshman All-America Team voted on by the Football Writers Association of America in seven of the last eight seasons and in 14 of the 20 seasons the FWAA has honored college football freshman.
Rattler led all freshman in college football this past season in passing touchdowns (28), passing offense (275.5 per game) and total offense (290.1). He completed 214 of 317 pass attempts for 3,031 yards with seven interceptions in 11 games. In his last seven outings, Rattler threw 15 touchdowns and just two interceptions, showing his improvement as the season went along.
Rattler exceeded 200 passing yards in 10 of his 11 games this season.
Mims recorded 37 receptions, 610 receiving yards, an average of 16.5 yards per catch. His nine touchdown catches are an Oklahoma freshman record. Four of his touchdown passes were for at least 45 yards.
The true freshman from Frisco, Texas, also returned punts for the Sooners. He ranked 12th nationally with a punt-return average of 12.5 yards. Mims is the first Oklahoma wide receiver and the eighth Sooner true freshman to earn FWAA Freshman All-America honors.
Rattler, who hails from Phoenix, Arizona, is just the second Oklahoma quarterback to be named an FWAA Freshman All-American. Sam Bradford was named to the team in 2007.
Since the first FWAA Freshman All-America Team was introduced in 2001, 17 different Sooners have been so honored. This is the second time that two Oklahoma freshman have been named to the team (DB Zack Sanchez and LB Dominique Alexander were Freshman All-Americans in 2013).
