Oklahoma football: Sooners’ bowl prospects still a smorgasbord
By Chip Rouse
If you’re wondering what postseason bowl the Oklahoma football team might end up in, it’s still too early to tell.
Two things we do know, though, is that the Sooners have the requisite number of wins to go bowling, and we can narrow the prospects down to four.
Should Oklahoma win its final two regular season games (at home against Baylor this weekend and at West Virginia on Dec. 12), the Sooners will play Iowa State in the Big 12 Championship on Dec. 19.
If the Sooners are able to avenge their earlier 37-30 loss to Iowa State and win a sixth straight conference championship, they will likely be the Big 12 representative in the Cotton Bowl Classic at AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas, on Dec. 30.
Should OU make it to the conference championship game but lose to the Cyclones, which has already clinched one of the two spots in the league title game, the likely destination for the Sooners will be the Alamo Bowl in San Antonio, Texas, on Dec. 29, as the Big 12’s second-place team.
If the Sooners lose one of their final two regular-season contests, they will head to either the Cheez-It Bowl on Dec. 29 in Orlando, Florida, or the Texas Bowl in Houston.
Normally six wins is the requirement for teams to be bowl eligible, but if that number is reduced to five because of abbreviated scheduling caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, as many as seven Big 12 teams could receive a bowl invitation.
Iowa State with seven wins and Oklahoma and Oklahoma State with six have already earned bowl eligibility. Texas and West Virginia are both at five overall wins this season, with two games to go, and Kansas State and TCU are sitting at four wins, but K-State has just one game remaining (this weekend at home against Texas).
