Oklahoma football: Sooners climb to No. 19 in rankings
By Chip Rouse
Oklahoma football was the beneficiary of all the weekend surprises in college football, moving up five spots to No. 19 in the two major polls.
The Sooners are nearly back to where they were five weeks ago, when they dropped from No. 3 to No. 18 in the Associated Press Top 25 and No. 16 in the Coaches Poll after allowing Kansas State to come back from a 21-point second-half deficit and upset OU in Norman.
Oklahoma is one of four teams out of the Big 12 ranked in both polls this week. Oklahoma State remains the highest-ranked Big 12 team (No, 14 in the AP and 12 in the Coaches Poll, down from No. 6 following a loss to Texas on Saturday). Iowa State moved into the No. 17 spot in both polls, and Texas returned to the rankings with the win at Oklahoma State, taking over the No, 22 spot in the AP poll.
Clemson, Alabama, Ohio State, Notre Dame and Georgia, all winners over the weekend, remained one through five in both polls. Rounding out the top 10 are Cincinnati, Texas A&M, Florida and BYU, in that order both the AP and Coaches polls. Wisconsin in No. 10 in the AP rankings and Miami is in the 10 spot in the Coaches Poll.
North Carolina and Michigan, No. 13 and 14, respectively, last week in the Coaches Poll, fell the furthest this week, dropping 11 spots after suffering upsets on Saturday. North Carolina, a 44-41 loser to Virginia, fell completely out of the AP Top 25, while Michigan’s loss at home to Michigan State sent the Wolverines tumbling 10 spots in the AP poll, to No. 23.
The Sooners (4-2) will have the opportunity to move up some more with back-to-back home games against hapless Kansas and ranked Oklahoma State in the next three weeks.
