Oklahoma football: Grading the Sooners at mid-term of 2020 season
By Chip Rouse
Offense: A-
The Sooners were not expected to realize much of a drop off in offensive production this season, even with a starting quarterback who had thrown just 11 passes and had not started a college game.
The one thing you can count on from a Lincoln Riley-led offense is plenty of points and a plethora of offensive production. And that exactly what the offensive has delivered this season, right on schedule.
Even with limited experience at several skill positions, the Sooners rank 12th the in the nation in total offense (501.2 yards per game and 14th in scoring (39.8). Behind redshirt freshman quarterback Spencer Rattler, who ranks No. 5 in the country in passing efficiency rating (180.2) and yards per pass attempt (10.1) and sixth in passing touchdowns (15), Oklahoma ranks 7th nationally in passing offense.
The Oklahoma running game, which is an integral part of the Air Raid offense the way the Sooners operate it, is beginning to come around after a sluggish start to the season. Junior running back T.J. Pledger has rushed for over 100 yards the past two games and is averaging 5.8 yards per carry in those two outings.
True freshman Marvin Mims has emerged as the Sooners big-play receiving threat. He has six touchdown catches on the season, which is tied for second nationally among Power Five players. He has TD receptions of 50 and 61 yards in OU’s win last weekend over TCU.
