Oklahoma football: WR Marvin Mims earns two Big 12 weekly honors
By Chip Rouse
Oklahoma football wide receiver Marvin Mims is the Big 12 Co-Offensive Player as well as the conference’s Newcomer of the week.
Mims, a true freshman from the northern Dallas suburb of Frisco, Texas, caught four passes in the Sooners’ 33-14 win over TCU for a total of 132 yards and two long touchdown catches. He caught a 50-yard touchdown pass in the second quarter that put Oklahoma ahead 17-0, and a 61-yarder in the third quarter that was the Sooners’ longest play from scrimmage this season.
The Sooner freshman also had a 19-yard kickoff return and two punt returns for 38 yards, including a 38-yard return that set up an OU touchdown in the third quarter. For the day, Mims totaled 193 all-purpose yards, or almost 40 percent of Oklahoma’s 498 yards of offense.
Mims ranks second nationally in punt returns among FBS players who have played at least one game this season. He is averaging 17.9 yards per punt return.
His six receiving touchdowns this season ties him for the Big 12 lead with Joshua Moore of Texas. No other freshman in the country has more than three receiving touchdowns. Mims is one touchdown shy of equaling an Oklahoma single-season record for a freshman.
Mims’ six receiving touchdowns is a new OU record for a freshman in the first five games. The previous record was four by Ryan Broyles in 2008 and CeeDee Lamb in 2017.
The other Big 12 honorees this week are Iowa State running back Breece Hall, Co-Offensive Player of the Week along with Mims; Baylor linebacker Terrel Bernard, Big 12 Defensive Player of the Week and Kansas State wide receiver Phillip Brooks, Special Teams Player of the Week.
Mims is the fifth Oklahoma Sooner to receive a Big 12 weekly award this season. QB Spencer Rattler was named Newcomer of the Week and Stephen Johnson was Special Teams Player of the Week on Sept. 14; on Oct. 14, RB T.J. Pledger was Offensive Player of the Week and LB David Ugwoebu was Special Teams Player of the Week.
