Oklahoma football: Getting to know 2020 newcomer DT Perrion Winfrey
By Chip Rouse
Oklahoma football fans are going to be hearing the name Perrion Winfrey a lot in the 2020 season.
And that’s good news because Winfrey is one of the newcomers on a Sooner defensive line that lost All-Big 12 First-Team defensive tackle Neville Gallimore, who was selected in the third round of the recent NFL Draft by the Dallas Cowboys.
Oklahoma also lost Marquise Overton and Dillon Faamatau off the defensive line, so Winfrey’s arrival comes at a good time.
Winfrey, from Maywood, Illinois, a small town just west of downtown Chicago, was rated the No. 1 junior-college recruit by both 247Sports and ESPN and No. 6 by Rivals. In two seasons at Iowa Western Community College, the 6-foot, 3-inch, 305-pound defensive tackle recorded 55 tackles, 23 tackles for loss, 9.5 quarterback sacks and one forced fumble.
Winfrey chose to play at Oklahoma over offers from at least 20 other major programs, including Alabama, LSU, Florida, Florida State, Arizona, Nebraska, Texas, Oregon and Tennessee.
Winfrey told Ryan Aber, OU beat writer for The Oklahoman newspaper after the early national signing day last December he was attracted to Oklahoma because of defensive coordinator Alex Grinch’s aggressive approach to defense.
“They’re building a defense that attacks the ball — no playing blocks — and I love it,” he said.
Winfrey will wear the jersey No. 8, a number worn by such OU defensive stalwarts of the recent past as DB Donte Nicholson and LB Ryan Reynolds. Sophomore wide receiver Trejan Bridges wears No. 8 on offense.
It would not be surprising to see Winfrey as a starting defensive lineman in Oklahoma’s home season opener against Missouri State on Sept. 5.
