Oklahoma football: Ranking the top-5 Sooner DBs of modern era
By Chip Rouse
No. 3 — S Randy Hughes (1972-1974)
Like most of the great Oklahoma defensive players, Randy Hughes played on a Sooner national championship team. He was a member of the 1974 Oklahoma national championship team.
Hughes played at OU between 1972 and 1974 and was as tough a defensive player as they come. He was the Tulsa World’s Prep Player of the Year in the state of Oklahoma the fall before committing to Oklahoma. The Sooners won a fierce recruiting battle for Hughes’ commitment.
He became the starting strong safety in 1973, led the team in interceptions (5) and earned All-Big Eight honors that season. The Sooners were 32-1 in Hughes’ three seasons and 20-1 in the Big Eight, with three Big Eight championships. He was named a First-Team All-American in 1974 and ranks fourth in school history with 14 interceptions.
He was selected in the fourth round of the 1975 NFL Draft, 96th overall, by the Dallas Cowboys. He played six seasons with the Cowboys.
In 1979, Hughes was voted to the 1970s All-Big Eight Decade Team, and in 1995 he was named to the All-Time All-Big Eight Team.
