Oklahoma golfer Grant Reband is a finalist for the Jack Nicklaus National Player of the Year Award.
The Sooner senior is one of five finalists for the 2020 Nicklaus Award, which honors the nation’s most outstanding golfer at each level of collegiate golf. The award is voted on by the Golf Coaches Association of America.
This had been a terrific golf year for Reband. Before the college golf season was cancelled due to the worldwide coronavirus pandemic, he earned six top-10 tournament finishes, including sharing top honors at the Puerto Rico Classic with a nine-under-par, 54-hole score of 207.
The veteran OU golfer from Ft. Worth, Texas, scored in the 60s in six of his 18 rounds this season and posted a season scoring average of 69.39.
Reband’s performance in the 2019-20 season earned him a spot on the 2020 Arnold Palmer Cup U.S. team in addition to being named a Ping First-Team All-American.
Other Division I finalists for the 2020 Nicklaus Award are John Augenstein of Vanderbilt, Cooper Dossey of Baylor, Sahith Theegala of Pepperdine and Davis Thompson of Georgia.
In seven events this season, the men’s Oklahoma golf team recorded two tournament titles and two second-place finishes. Both tournament wins came in the fall: the Nike Collegiate Invitational and the Ka’anapali Classic on Maui in Hawaii. Reband finished third at the Nike tournament and tied for 10th in Hawaii.
The winner of the 2020 Nicklaus National Player of the Year Award will be revealed during the PGA Tour Memorial Tournament at Murifield Village in Dublin, Ohio, July 13-19.
Previous winners of the award include Tiger Woods, Phil Mickelson and Justin Thomas.
