Another superstar quarterback in the making

For the fourth consecutive year, the Sooners will have a new starting quarterback. The three previous ones have performed exceptionally well — well enough to win the Heisman Trophy in back-to-back years (Baker Mayfield and Kyler Murray) and runner-up in the Heisman voting (Jalen Hurts in 2019) — and the expectations are equally high for the next one to step into the starting role, Spencer Rattler.

Rated the No. 1 quarterback in the 2020 national class, Rattler redshirted last season. He did see action in three games, but more importantly he’s been acclimated to the college game for a full year now, which has allowed him to familiarize himself with Lincoln Riley’s offensive system while learning behind Hurts.

While it is not an absolute given that Rattler will win the starting role — that’s what Riley is saying publicly, anyway — something would have to go horribly wrong if we don’t see the former five-star recruit from the Phoenix area behind center to start the upcoming season.

All indications are that Rattler has a strong arm, good mobility and speed as a runner and is extremely accurate throwing the football. All are combinations that have served the previous quarterbacks exceptionally well under Riley’s tutelage. No reason to think Rattler won’t be the next headline-making Sooner QB.
