Oklahoma football: Which OU team is best of the rest in 21st century?
By Chip Rouse
No. 1 2000 Oklahoma vs. No. 8 2015 Oklahoma
Right out of the gate there was an upset in the Best of the Rest 2000s Oklahoma football tournament. Baker Mayfield and the 2015 Sooners overcame a 13-10 deficit entering the fourth quarter with a 27-point fourth-quarter explosion and 38-24 upset of the 2000 national championship Oklahoma squad.
Interestingly, the 2000 OU team was one of the best defensive teams of all the Sooners teams in the 2000s, but Mayfield and Co. were able to roll up just short of 500 yards of offense, while holding Josh Heupel and the 2000 Sooners to 391 total yards.
Mayfield completed 20 of 25 passes for 222 yards and one touchdown with no interceptions. Heupel was 20 of 33 passing for 327 yards and two touchdowns, but also threw two interceptions, one of which was returned 52 yards for a touchdown.
Samaje Perine gained 148 rushing yards, including a pair of touchdowns for the 2015 Sooners. Quentin Griffin rushed for 138 yards for the 2000 team.
The 2015 team scored the first 27 points in the fourth quarter to take a 38-10 lead. The 2000 Sooners scored two touchdowns in the final two minutes of the game, or the final margin would have been much greater than the final score indicated.
