CFP chairman Rob Mullens said the debate between Oklahoma and Utah was the most hotly-contested subject in this week’s meeting.

“We spent considerable time on it, more time than anywhere else on the board,” Mullens said in a conference call afterword.

If Utah were to win a close game against Oregon and the Sooners blow past Baylor in the Big 12 Championship Game, that might be just enough to push Oklahoma over the top. Other committee members might look at how difficult it is to beat a quality team like Baylor twice in the same season.

OU’s advantage

The Sooners go second in the head-to-head audition for the CFP with Utah. The Pac 12 Championship Game is on Friday night, which means not only will the Sooners know the outcome of the game going into Saturday morning’s Big 12 title contest, they will know exactly how Utah did.

Should the Utes win and Oklahoma find itself up by a couple of scores in the second half, they can always press the gas pedal and pile on points (which this committee seems to appreciate).

Either way, Oklahoma football fans have not one, but three games to watch intently during college football’s conference championship week and more football is always better – right?
