Oklahoma football captured its fifth straight Bedlam victory over Oklahoma State and 23rd true road win out of the last 24, gunning down the 23rd-ranked Cowboys 34-16 in the regular-season finale.

Once again, the Sooner defense came up big, holding the country’s 13th-best offense and 22nd-best scoring offense to 335 total yards, 145 below Oklahoma State’s season average, and just 16 points. The Cowboys were able to score just one touchdown along with three field goals, and only managed three points in the second half.

It was the fifth time this season that Oklahoma has held its opponent to 16 or fewer points.

Oklahoma State sophomore running back Chuba Hubbard came into the game as the FBS (Football Bowl Subdivision) rushing leader, averaging 166.5 yards per game, but the Sooners were able to hold him to 104 yards on 24 carries and just 4.3 yards per carry. Meanwhile the Sooners’ Kennedy Brooks outshined the Oklahoma State star, gaining 160 yards on the ground on 22 carries, and 7.3 yards per carry.

Earlier last week, Oklahoma State head coach Mike Gundy called Jalen Hurts a one-man band, implying that if you are able to shut down the Oklahoma quarterback you will effectively cut off the head of the snake as far as the Sooner offense is concerned.

Hurts was far from a one-man show on Saturday night, but it was not because of anything the Cowboys did to slow him down. Hurts had a productive game — 13 of 16 passing for 163 yards and a touchdown to go along with 61 yards rushing and another touchdown — but he served as more of a distributor, handing off to Brooks and finding open Sooner receivers when the situation called for it.

Eight OU receivers caught passes in the game, led by midseason All-American wide receiver CeeDee Lamb, who made four catches for 36 yards.

Although his numbers were lower than what he has averaged for most of the season, Hurts still managed the touchdown trifecta — with a rushing touchdown, a passing touchdown and a receiving touchdown — only the second Oklahoma player to ever accomplish the feat in the same game (the great Tommy McDonald was the other, in 1956).

The win was Oklahoma’s 11th of the season. The Sooners have registered 11 wins in a season 26 times, the most of any team in college football.

Here are a dozen more notable numbers that help tell the story of the game:

0 — Oklahoma committed no offensive turnovers in the game for the first time since the Sooners mid-October win over West Virginia.

3 — The Sooners have ended their last three opponents’ final possession with an interception (by linebacker Nik Bonitto against Baylor, defensive back Brendan Radley-Hiles against TCU and cornerback Parnell Motley against Oklahoma State).

4.98 — In the last 10 quarters, beginning with the second half at Baylor, the Oklahoma defense has allowed just 4.98 yards per play and 40 points against three opponents.

16-1 — Oklahoma’s all-time against Oklahoma State when both teams are ranked in the nation’s Top 25.

21 — The Sooners have won 21 consecutive games in the championship month of November. Their last November loss was to Baylor in 2014.

29 — Yards rushing by Oklahoma State star Chuba Hubbard on his last 15 carries against Oklahoma on Saturday night.

59 for 59Gabe Brkic is a perfect 59 for 59 this season in field goals (14 for 14) and extra-point attempts (45 for 45). He kicked two field goals and four extra points in the Sooners win over Oklahoma State.

83Kennedy Brooks is 83 yards shy of 1,000 rushing yards for the season, which would give the Sooners two 1,000-yard rushers this season (Jalen Hurts and Brooks).

89 — The Sooners now have 89 total wins over Oklahoma State (89-18-7), the second most against an opponent in FBS history (Nebraska is first with 91 wins over Kansas).

95 — Oklahoma committed a game-high nine penalties for 95 yards. The Sooners lead the Big 12 in penalties, averaging seven a game for 77 yards.

114Jalen Hurts accounted for 18 points in the victory over Oklahoma State, giving him 114 for the season. That is second only to Jack Mildren (124 in 1971) in OU history.

721 — Total yards allowed by which Oklahoma has outgained its last four opponents — Iowa State, Baylor, TCU and Oklahoma State — 1,329 to 608.
