Oklahoma football: Big 12 power rankings
Baylor (2-0)
Last week: Beat UTSA 63-13
This week: at Rice
The Bears fall in the same category as Oklahoma State. This is obviously a good-to-great team with real dark horse potential in the conference title race, but we don’t have enough to go on quite yet for the Bears.
They have certainly done what they are supposed to against inferior competition, pummelling Stephen F. Austin 56-17 and UTSA 63-14.
Charlie Brewer might still be the best pure passer in the Big 12 with 362 yards, six touchdowns and no interception in two games (both of which he spent the second half watching from the sideline with a comfortable lead).
but the Bears might very well have the weakest nonconference schedule in the entire league with only Rice left on the slate. This means that as dominant as it has been, Baylor is still being graded on a curve due to what teams it has played so far.
Again, if this were a forward-facing ranking on where we believe Baylor would end the season, they would be in the top four at least, but based on pure on-the-field results we are going to need to see more out of Matt Rhule’s group to move them up.
At least the Rice game this weekend will give us a comparable opponent, as Texas just got through dismantling the Owls a week ago but we probably won’t find out anything of substance until the Iowa State game on Sept. 28.
