Oklahoma football: Big 12 power rankings
Oklahoma State (3-0)
Last week: Beat Tulsa 40-21
This week: at Texas
There’s a lot of temptation to move Cowboys up higher than where they are in the power rankings based on what they could still do, but based on what they’ve done so far, they are probably in the right spot.
The Cowboys are looking like one of the best offensive teams in the country with Spencer Sanders in firm control of Mike Gundy‘s always-potent attack at quarterback, the nation’s leading rusher in Chubba Hubbard and one of the best wide receivers in the nation in Tylan Wallace.
With all of that and an improving defense, the Cowboys are capable of not only making the Big 12 title game, but giving whatever them they would meet there a run for its money. So what’s holding Oklahoma State back at No. 5 right now?
The fact that it hasn’t been able to take over games against inferior competition to the level you want to see from a conference title contender as of yet. OSU struggled with Tulsa, trailing 21-20 at halftime before pulling away for a convincing 40-21 win in the second half. The Cowboys also gave up 36 points to Oregon State in the season opener.
Neither of these things are major red flags, but based on a small sample size they are keeping the Cowboys ranked dead in the middle right now. Of course, that could all very well change if Oklahoma State goes into Austin and knocks off Texas this weekend.
