Oklahoma football: OU has dominated all-time series vs. UCLA
2018: Oklahoma 49, UCLA 21
The Sooners fell behind 7-0 early in the game, but then proceeded to bury the Bruins under an avalanche of 42 straight points to move to 2-0 on the season.
Kyler Murray was all over the field, accounting for 375 total yards and five scores as the Sooners simply overwhelmed the overmatched Bruins. CeeDee Lamb had one of the best games of his career to that point with 209 all purpose yards and a receiving touchdown.
The Bruins were able to put up 14 points in the fourth quarter to make the game look more competitive, but they were the epitome of garbage time scores with the game well in hand by the time they occurred.
The 2018 Sooners would go on to a 12-2 record, dropping a game to Texas in the Cotton Bowl before avenging that loss in the Big 12 Championship Game.
In the College Football Playoff they ran into Alabama, but despite falling behind 28-0 early Oklahoma did rally to make the game competitive late and eventually fell 45-34.
Fun facts:
- The Sooners won this game at a heavy cost, losing Rodney Anderson for the season with an ACL tear. Anderson had been on some early Heisman ballots after going for more than 1,000 yards against Georgia in the previous year’s Sugar Bowl.
- Playing a football game Pasadena is as close as Kyler Murray ever got to suiting up in Oakland while under contract with the A’s. The two-sport star had been drafted the previous May by the franchise in the fist round, but turned down the money, electing to go to the NFL draft. He was the No. 1 overall pick the following April.
- The game featured two of the brightest offensive minds in football in Chip Kelly and Lincoln Riley. Kelly helped revolutionize offense at the college level while at Oregon, while Riley has done the same during his tenures at East Carolina and Oklahoma.
- The Sooner defense recorded 12.5 tackles for loss and six sacks in a dominant performance. It’s hard to imagine that the aggressive group that showed up on the field that day was only a few weeks away from a performance against Texas so bad that it cost Mike Stoops his job in the middle of the season.
