Especially two guys who were recruited by one of the best evaluators of quarterback talent in the country like Lincoln Riley.

So why now?

So why now? The answer is simple. The Sooners are now out of camp mode and into full game prep mode. They have to assign a pecking order of quarterbacks, find who will run their scout team and start preparing to win their season opener and beyond.

If you look back at the last three times Lincoln Riley has named a starter (Baker Mayfield in 2015, Kyler Murray in 2018) it has come shortly after the last scrimmage of fall camp and leading into the week in which the Sooners are prepping for a game.

It’s time for Jalen Hurts to take control of the first team offense (I would say huddle, but we all know the Sooners don’t do that) for good – and take his official place as a team leader. Don’t be surprised to see him named a team captain when those decisions come down in the next couple of weeks, either.
