Oklahoma football: Defensive keys for fall camp
More questions than answers in the secondary
Even with the flux situation at defensive coordinator the Sooners used duct tape and bailing wire to cobble together an extremely talented class of incoming freshmen defenders, most of which are showing up for fall camp.
The secondary will be particularly interesting with safeties Jamal Morris and Jeremiah Criddell coming in. Both were highly-regarded four-star prospects that could really challenge for playing time in a secondary that Grinch said has “more questions than answers” during his press conference.
Morris is a 6-foot-2 185-pound prospect from Fort Bend Bush High School in Texas and Criddell is a 5-foot-11 188 pounder out of California. They were the No. 24 and No. 15 safeties in the 2019 class, respectively, according to 247 sports. There’s also Ty DeArman a dark-horse late addition to the Sooners secondary stolen from Herm Edwards and Arizona State.
“You like to have established guys when you walk out there on the first play of a series, but you take advantage of the fact that maybe you don’t,” Grinch said. “The competition is such that you have multiple guys who can fill that role.”
The incoming safeties will compete with guys like Delarrin Turner-Yell, Justin Broiles, Chanse Sylvie, Robert Barnes and possibly Jordan Parker (who may shift over to nickel as well). All of these players have seen the field at one time or another.
