Grant Calcaterra – junior tight end – Biletnikoff and Mackey
The junior tight end has caught 36 passes for 558 yards and nine touchdowns in his first two seasons as a Sooner. With an unbelievable catch radius and velcro-like hands, he’s correctly been positioned as one of the best players at his position in the country.
Handicapping his chances: We can all but take the Baletnikoff off the table right now for Calcaterra. Not only has the award never been presented to a tight end, he also splits time with fellow tight end/wide receiver hybrid Lee Morris and probably won’t put up the kind of numbers needed to become the first.
The Mackey could happen though. Mark Andrews won it in 2017 playing the exact same position. It would probably require separating himself from Morris a little more and earning a larger portion of the snaps, but there’s no doubt he’s a matchup nightmare for opposing defenses and as good a pass-catching tight end as there is in the country.
