Jalen Hurts – senior quarterback – Maxwell and Walter Camp

The prize of the transfer portal, Hurts brings national championship experience and a talented dual-threat skill set to the Sooners in 2019. He has thrown for 5,626 yards 48 touchdowns and only 12 interceptions and added 1,976 yards and 22 more scores on the ground. He seems like the favorite to win the starting job in a Sooner offense that has produced a pair of Heisman winners and No. 1 overall picks in the past two seasons at the quarterback spot. It seems a little weird that Hurts wasn’t on the Davey O’Brien Award watch list, a list he made in each of the last two seasons, but the primary reason seems to be Lincoln Riley’s continued insistence that he hasn’t won the starting job yet.

Handicapping his chances:  Should Hurts win the Sooners’ starting job one would think the Maxwell, Walter Camp, Davey O’Brien and of course the Heisman Trophy are all on the table. Lincoln Riley’s offense demanding of its quarterbacks, but also works to showcase their talent.

College football writers love a great story and a senior transfer quarterback leading a new team to a college football playoff would make for a heck of a tale. There is a little concern for fatigue, however, with both Baker Mayfield and Kyler Murray bringing home stacks of national awards over the past few seasons.
