2. Kyler Murray 2018
There’s an argument to be made for the three guys behind Murray on this list – Jason White, Sam Bradford and Josh Heupel – but when you start looking at the stats it’s hard not to put Murray at No. 1.
Sam Bradford set an NCAA record for passing efficiency in 2008 with a staggering 180.94 – a record Mayfield would break twice during his career – but Murray ended up ahead of both of them with a 199.2.
Murray threw 42 touchdowns to just seven interceptions and by the way, he also rushed for 1,000 yards that year. That’s what puts Murray up to the No. 2 spot on this list. When we sat down we found Murray to be dead even in most categories as a passer – arm strength, accuracy and intangibles – but you have to factor in the fact he could take off and burn a defense with sub 4.4 speed at any time as well.
Murray was a Heisman finalist during his only season as the Sooners quarterback. He led Oklahoma football to a Big 12 title and a College Football Playoff appearance and helped carry a defense that ranked dead last (No. 129) against the pass in 2018.
