The comeback win over Texas in 2017

It looked like the Sooners were going to run away with the 2017 Red River Showdown early on, leaping out to a 20-0 advantage in the first half before Texas knew what had hit it.

Still, the pesky Longhorns hung around and clawed their way back into the game. Capitalizing on some Sooner mistakes and making a few plays of their own, Texas punched all the way back to take a 24-23 lead in the fourth quarter and energized their fan base into a frenzy.

With the Burnt Orange side of the stands trying to rattle him and all the game momentum stacked against him Baker Mayfield never panicked. He knew the Sooners had been setting up a big play all day.

On the first play of the drive Mayfield took the snap and used his eyes to lure the Texas safety right where he wanted him to be before finally firing a strike down the right sideline to tight end Mark Andrews who had broken open on a wheel route.

Andrews did the rest, racing past the Texas defense as the television announcer exclaimed “Baker Mayfield does it!” to give the Sooners a 29-24 lead and back-to-back wins in the Red River Showdown.

It was a curtain call win for Mayfield against Texas to help him finish with a 2-1 record against the Longhorns as the OU quarterback. It also gave him a Heisman highlight reel moment in a big rivalry game on on a national stage.
