Oklahoma football: Sooners land nation’s No. 1 recruit
Oklahoma football fans got some huge recruiting news when 2021 quarterback Brock Vandagriff pledged his services to the Sooners on Thursday.
Brock Vandegriff is the No. 1 quarterback in his class and is currently ranked the top overall prospect according to Rivals. He chose Oklahoma football over Alabama, Clemson, LSU, Florida and his home state of Georgia among many others. He has drawn some early comparisons to Clemson freshman superstar Trevor Lawrence early on.
Many believed the Bulldogs were out ahead in Vandegriff’s recruiting, but a recent visit to Norman seemed to turn the tide and the quarterback’s commitment came less than two weeks after. He told Rivals:
"Oklahoma was the best decision for me because it checked all the boxes as an individual and as an athlete. The staff was more than welcoming, and unbelievably outgoing throughout the process. It only took two visits to know that is where I will be spending my college years. THAT is how special it is in Norman."
The commitment moves the Sooners up to the No. 4 overall class in the Rivals rankings for 2021 despite having just two commits so far in Vandegriff and Richmond, Texas wide receiver Cody Jackson, but having an elite quarterback committed this early is always a huge selling point for the rest of the class.
There was of course, plenty for Sooners’ head coach Lincoln Riley to sell to Vandegriff after Oklahoma football became the first program in history to produce back-to-back Heisman winners and No. 1 overall draft picks at the quarterback position.
Oklahoma currently has the No. 1 quarterback of the 2019 class on campus in Spencer Rattler, but strangely has yet to land a commitment at the position for 2020, though Riley is clearly just being picky as the OU head coach seems to have a policy of taking just one quarterback per class. If the Sooners don’t end up with a signal caller for 2020 it would be the first time OU hasn’t taken a quarterback since 2006.
