Oklahoma football: Sooners make cut for No. 1 player in 2020 class
Oklahoma football is in the mix as one of five Power Five teams still in play for Zach Evans, the No. 1 player in the 2020 class.
The Sooners, along with Alabama, Georgia, LSU and Ohio State, will compete for the services of the five-star running back from Galena Park-North Shore High School in Texas.
The new top five seems to indicate that Evans will likely end up out of state after 247 Sports’ “crystal ball” seemed to indicate that a pair of in-state schools (Texas A&M and Texas) were in the lead in the race to land the highest-ranked recruit in the Lone Star State.
Evans even seemed to throw a little shade at the Longhorns in an interview with 247 Sports after making the announcement.
"“You don’t know how to put it. I don’t want to be disrespectful. I ain’t saying (Texas) can’t win a natty. It’s just at the moment [Texas is] not quite there.”"
Oklahoma already has a commitment from the No. 5 running back in the 2020 class in Aledo’s Jase McClellan, but is looking to add at least one more top-end player at the position and could possibly add two more depending on the talent of the commitments.
The Sooners had previously pursued Kendall Milton – the No. 2 running back in the class – but OU was left out of Milton’s list of top four schools (Alabama, Georgia, LSU and Ohio State) earlier this month. They also missed out on No. 1 all purpose back Chris Tyree, who chose Notre Dame around the same time.
Another name to keep an eye on is Mesquite Poteet (Texas) product Seth McGowan. The consensus four-star recruit and No. 15 running back in the 2019 class appears to be a heavy OU lean according to Rivlas.com, which has him currently at 100 percent on their Futurecast.
McGowan plays in a similar offense in high school and would be a great fit for the Sooners.
