Oklahoma football: Kyler Murray’s potential NFL landing spots
The Oakland A’s loss is going to end up being one NFL team’s gain as Kyler Murray has shifted all of his focus to football going forward.
The reigning Heisman winner Kyler Murray will showcase his talents at the NFL combine and the Oklahoma pro day, working out for a flock of interested pro football teams.
Where does he end up? Most mock drafts have him going in the first round, but it’s anybody’s guess how high or low he is picked. Much will be decided by his showing in the combine. Some “draft experts” have him going as the No. 1 overall pick, while others have placed him as the fourth quarterback off the board behind Ohio State’s Dwayne Haskins, Missouri’s Drew Lock and Duke’s Daniel Jones.
Here’s a list of NFL teams that could pick Kyler Murray (sorted by where that team drafts) and a case both for and against each one.
Pick No. 1 The Arizona Cardinals
Why it could happen: Kliff Kingsbury once famously said he would take Kyler Murray with the first pick if he could. Of course, it was all in the realm of hypothetical at the time as the former Texas Tech quarterback was the head coach at his alma mater at the time, but now we are talking about it as a real possibility (football is weird).
Kyler Murray has run a similar offense to what Kingsbury hopes to use in the NFL for most of his football career. He was originally recruited to A&M to play in an air raid scheme designed by Kingsbury and later became a star at Oklahoma in Lincoln Riley’s air raid-adjacent attack. He knows the terminology and should have a shorter learning curve than anyone on the Cardinals roster. How cool would it be for OU fans to get to brag about having back-to-back No. 1 overall picks at quarterback?
The case against it: Uhhh.. The Cardinals already have a quarterback (a guy they seem to like). They traded up to take Josh Rosen at No. 10 last year and have invested a ton of money and resources into making him into the cornerstone of the franchise for years to come. Yes, the Cardinals could always trade Rosen away, but can they get proper market value on a guy they used a top 10 pick on just a year ago?
Wouldn’t it be wise to use that top pick elsewhere for a franchise that clearly has a ton of pressing needs? Those questions all seem to hurt the chances of folks in the Phoenix area donning Kyler Murray red and white jerseys next year.
